Let’s work together for better cycling in the Illawarra and Shellharbour.

Joining IBUG means becoming part of a passionate, active community working to create positive change. Membership gives us a stronger voice as we advocate for safer cycling, improved infrastructure, and greater participation across the region.

Together, we can achieve more. With more members, more volunteers, and more resources, we increase our impact. It’s powerful to say we represent 500 people who ride — much more so than 50!

By becoming a member, you support our mission and our Strategic Plan — to make the Wollongong and Shellharbour Local Government Areas places where everyone can ride safely for transport, recreation, wellbeing, and social connection. Whether it’s on roads, shared paths, or separated bike lanes, we believe riding should be safe, accessible, and encouraged.

Why join?

  • Amplify our advocacy for better cycling infrastructure and maintenance

  • Contribute to community campaigns and report issues directly to local councils and state government.

  • Support practical, local change through projects aligned with our Strategic Plan.

  • Access member perks, including a 15% discount on Bicycle NSW membership.

Plus, it’s easy and affordable — membership is just $5 per year!

It’s quick and easy to become a member. Just fill out the membership form and join us today for only $5 a year!

What we focus on

Our priorities are shaped by our members. The top issues from our latest member survey include:

  • Road safety for cyclists.

  • Increased infrastructure funding.

  • Maintenance of shared paths and roads.

We encourage members to report problems, submit feedback to councils, and help monitor cycling conditions. Check out our reporting how-to guide and updates on Facebook @bikeillawarra.

Meetings & Involvement

We meet every second month — usually at 6:30pm on the second Monday — alternating between in-person at Corrimal Community Centre and online via Zoom. Dates and reminders are shared by email and on our Facebook pages on FaceBook @bikeillawarra and @BikeWollongong. Meetings are open to all — attending is encouraged, but not required.

Upcoming Meetings:

  • Monday, 14 July 2025 (In-person)

  • Monday, 18 August 2025 (Online)

  • Monday, 8 September 2025 (In-person)

  • Monday, 13 October 2025 (Online)

  • Monday, 10 November 2025 (In-person)

  • Monday, 8 December 2025 (Online)

How We Take Action

We advocate in four key ways:

  1. Reporting maintenance issues and hazards

  2. Reporting incidents and near-miss crashes

  3. Making formal submissions

  4. Writing to local and state representatives

Our action subcommittees, like Women’s Cycling, help carry out the work in our Strategic Plan. Members are welcome to join and help drive projects forward.

We also maintain a Missing Links database to track gaps in cycling infrastructure — from missing kerb ramps to major network connections. This helps councils prioritise and plan. We encourage volunteers to audit works along their riding routes. Click here for an audit form example to use as a template. Click here to access the delivery program and missing links database.

Reporting to Council? Use SnapSendSolve or report directly — Wollongong Council prefers direct reports.
